In Sins of a Solar Empire, planets are important as they form the core of your empire and are the main way of gathering resources. There are different types of planets, each with its own unique features, advantages, and disadvantages. These include Terran, Desert, Ice, Volcanic, Asteroids, Dead Asteroids, and Pirate Bases. Each planet type offers varying population capacities, resource availability, and defensive capabilities. Additionally, planets can be upgraded in multiple ways, such as improving infrastructure, designating a new capital, and increasing logistic and tactical capacities. The number of planets an empire can support depends on various factors, including the player's strategy, resources, and ability to maintain allegiance.

What You'll Learn
Terran Planets
There are two known Terran homeworlds: Desert Worlds, which are dry and sandy with little water, and support a smaller population; and Terran Worlds, which are lush green worlds with plenty of water and life, and support the largest population of all planet types.
There are six planetary improvements that an empire can use to upgrade its colonies. These include Civilian Infrastructure, which increases the maximum population a colony can sustain; Emergency Facilities, which increase the planet's health; and Designate Capital Planet, which allows an empire to change its capital.

The TEC and Vasari races show some interest in these planets and may upgrade their planet population by 15%. The Advent, however, show no significant interest in colonising these planets except for the abundance of crystal.

Volcanic Planets
In Sins of a Solar Empire, Volcanic Planets are unstable worlds rife with volcanoes and geological activity. They are very hot and have an unbearable climate, requiring research to survive. Volcanic Planets are favoured by the Vasari, who have researched how to increase their population on these planets by 30%. Even with this research, the population is still lower than Terran, Desert, and Ice worlds.

Asteroids
In the game Sins of a Solar Empire, asteroids are a common type of colonizable "planet" that can be found. They are rich in resources and can support tiny populations, but they are also lightly defended, making them an excellent early-game colonisation target.
There are two types of asteroids:
- Dead Asteroids: These have no resources or logistics slots and are used only for tactical purposes. They are virtually useless and ignored unless they are in a very strategic location.
- Regular Asteroids: These can contain up to three extractors, either one metal and two crystal extractors, or two metal and one crystal extractor.

Frequently asked questions
The game doesn't seem to have a set limit on the number of planets that can be supported. However, there are different planet types, and each planet type has a maximum number of logistic slots available for upgrades.
The different planet types include Terran, Desert, Ice, Volcanic, Asteroids, Dead Asteroids, and Pirate Bases. There are also uncolonizable planets like Gas Giants, Wormholes, and Antimatter Fountains.
Terran planets can support the largest population and are therefore good for sustaining a strong economy.
Planets form the core of your empire and are the main source of resources. They can be upgraded in various ways, such as increasing population, improving defence, and discovering hidden resources or artifacts.
