Country music stars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw first met in 1994. At the time, Hill had just finalised her divorce from her first husband, Daniel Hill, and was engaged to Scott Hendricks. McGraw, meanwhile, was dating Kristine Donahue.

The pair met at a Country Radio Seminar showcase for new talent in Nashville. They took their first picture together backstage at the "New Faces" show. McGraw later shared this photo on Instagram in October 2023, writing:

They married in 1996

The couple tied the knot on October 6, 1996, in a surprise wedding ceremony in McGraw's hometown of Rayville, Louisiana. The couple invited their family and friends to what they said was a softball game and concert, but instead surprised everyone with their nuptials.

"We were in the dressing room, here, June 26, 1996, and it was raining and stuff and we'd been on tour for a while together, and I joked around with her about getting married, " he recalled. "So I went onstage... When I came back offstage, [I saw] a Sharpie with lipstick kisses all over it, saying, 'Yes! I'm gonna be your wife'."

Just four months after getting engaged, Hill and McGraw married. The couple said their "I do's" under a locust tree in McGraw's aunt's backyard. The "My Best Friend" singer said his sisters were a "little upset" because they wanted to "dress up," but otherwise, everyone was pleased.

The couple has credited their strong relationship with helping McGraw overcome his past drinking problem. "I guarantee you, had I not gotten married to Faith at 29 years old, A, I probably would've run my career into the ground, and B, I would've died already with my career into the ground — one or the other, and it wouldn't have ever been where it's at now," McGraw said during an August 2023 interview with Zane Lowe.

They have three daughters
