He also talks about the flowers in the field. Have you seen some of the beautiful flowers God has made? It’s all God’s doing.

One of God’s names is Jehovah Jireh, which means the Lord will provide. Putting faith in God might look like obeying what God asks you to do and even when it feels like you won’t have enough money, trusting that God will provide for your needs.

When you’re struggling with faith, it can feel like your life’s purpose, friendships, family relationships, and understanding of the world are all under threat. So allowing yourself to ask hard questions about what you believe takes a lot of courage. Questioning your faith is often how you grow it.

A seed of faith buried deep in the ground has a shell of protection around it to shield it from the elements. When a sapling sheds the protection of the seed to poke its head above the ground, it is vulnerable to wind, rain, snow, and animals. But its roots keep it tethered to the ground. And the tugs of the wind and the rain actually help to strengthen the sapling into a tree that can withstand torrential storms without a shell. Your faith is the same.

If you’ve started asking the hard questions, you’ve already started to poke out of your protective shell. Pretending you haven’t thought of questions that you are afraid to answer is like trying to force toothpaste back into its tube. It’s not going to work. And that might be a good thing. Faith was never meant to be static or unchanging. Questioning your faith means you are taking seriously the task of pursuing truth and figuring out what it means to live according to it. This is what discipleship is all about!

God is ever present. There are times we will be tempted to feel alone. Maybe our loved one has died, and we don’t know how we will live without them, but God has promised he will never leave us.

When we find ourselves in trouble of any kind, we can take a deep breath and thank God that he is right there with us. In this world full of technology, it’s wonderful to know we don’t have to text God and find out he’s not available or call him on the phone to find he’s stepped out. God is there 24/7 and he encourages us to call on him whenever we need him. Putting our faith in God is going to him with whatever is on our minds.

When I taught Sunday School to Kindergarteners, I shared the story of Jesus feeding the 5000. He took the lunch of one little boy, five loaves and two fishes, and fed 5000 men, women, and children. When they were done eating, Jesus instructed his disciples to gather up the remains which filled 12 baskets! God whispered to me, “See, I don’t waste anything.”

Are you going through a difficult time right now? Have you experienced things you don’t understand? Let me just tell you, God doesn’t waste anything. He has a purpose in the things he allows. While it may not make much sense to you right now, one day it will.

He knows everything about us, just like He knew everything about Adam and Eve, the first man and woman He created. God made man without sin, but man had free will and chose to sin. Then, God redeemed him. Through Adam, all men were sinners, but through Jesus Christ, we can become righteous. We just have to believe that Jesus is our saviour, shedding his blood on the cross for our sins.

God's ways are perfect. When something happens in our lives that we don't understand, we need to remember that God's ways are perfect. His ways and thoughts are much higher than ours. Having faith in God means believing that even though things look tangled up, He is able to untangle them.

• Abraham and Isaac (Genesis 22): Abraham's faith is tested when God asks him to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Abraham's willingness to obey and his trust in God's character is a powerful demonstration of faith.
• David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17): David, a young shepherd, faces the giant Goliath with bold faith, declaring, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied."
