Faith, Prayer, And Blessings: A Spiritual Journey

Faith and prayer are two of the most important pillars of Christianity. The Bible says that without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. Prayer is a way for Christians to connect with God, and faith is what gives their prayers power. When Christians have faith in God and pray with sincerity, they can be assured that God will answer their prayers and grant their requests. This is not to say that God will always give them what they want, but rather, He will give them what they need, even when they don't realize it themselves. For instance, in Mark 11:24, Jesus says, Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. This verse highlights the importance of having faith when praying. It suggests that when individuals pray with genuine faith, they can be confident that their prayers will be answered, even if the answer doesn't always come in the form they expect.

Pray for God's guidance and direction

Praying for God's guidance and direction is a powerful way to live by faith and not by one's own understanding. It is a reminder that God is always present and willing to help make the right choices in life. When facing challenges, one can find strength and courage in God's guidance, which comes in many forms, such as the still, small voice of conscience, the Bible, prayer, meditation, and fellowship with other believers.

Pray for God's will to be done on Earth

Prayer is a powerful force for good. Faithful followers of Jesus have been praying for God's will to be done on Earth for two millennia. But what does it really mean to pray for God's will to be done on Earth?

A Prayer for the World

Praying for God's will to be done on Earth is an acknowledgement that there is a better way for this world to run than the way that it does, and that God cares about this Earth. It is a prayer for the consummation of Christ's kingdom, for Christ to return as King, and for Heaven to finally come down to Earth as promised. It is a prayer for God's will to reign in this sinful world.

This is not just a nice phrase to affix to calendars and coffee mugs. This is a revolutionary prayer. It is an act of praying against the prevailing, sinful, world system. It's a longing for the curse to be reversed, for Heaven's healing and hope to prevail upon the brokenness of our families, our communities, and our world.

You cannot pray this prayer without being drafted into action to see God's will done on Earth. It is a dependence on the Spirit of God, who alone, working through His people, can see His will done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

A Prayer for Myself

As much as this is a prayer for the world, it is also a prayer for myself. To pray, "Your will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven" is to say, "Lord, do your will in me." This is a risky prayer, as it is saying to the Lord: I have my will, you have your will, and sometimes those two do not line up.

To pray this prayer and mean it, we must be willing to submit our wills to His will. It is an acknowledgement that the One who best knows how to run my life is God. This is a prayer that must be prayed daily because we have hearts prone to wander. This prayer becomes a pledge of obedience to God's will.

In order to submit to God's will, we must study to know God's will. How can we do God's will if we are ignorant of what He asks of us? If we are to pray this prayer, that means we are committing not only to obeying it but also to knowing God's will so we can obey it.

As we walk with God, He works on our hearts, our affections, and our desires. We begin to think like He thinks, love what He loves, and hate what He hates.

Lastly, there is a trust aspect of surrendering to God's will. It is the satisfaction of knowing that God's will is best. Despite our doubts concerning God's will, in the end, we can trust Him. We were made to do His will. To trust God's will, to rest in Him, is to accept His sanctifying hand, to let Him mold you and make you, to respond to the needs of the world, and be part of bringing Heaven to Earth.

The Prayer of Jesus

Lastly, we cannot read "Your will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven" without thinking of Jesus' own example of this submission. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed, pleaded with God, "Take this cup from me, not my will but yours be done." He accepted the cup of God's wrath for sin, accepted the darkness and death of the cross, and the curse of sin.

In this, we can read Jesus' words to the disciples to pray this way—not as words from the mountain, but words Jesus himself lived out. These words called the disciples to yield their own wills for the sake of the gospel.

Jesus' acceptance of God's will over his own enables us to do God's will. Jesus is the bridge between Heaven and Earth. He is the answer to the prayer, "On Earth as it is in Heaven." So, in some ways, this prayer has been partially fulfilled. In our own lives, Jesus bridged the gap between Heaven and Earth. By his death, we now have access to God. By his resurrection, we now have life, here and in eternity.

Pray for God's forgiveness

Faith is a cornerstone of prayer, and the Bible provides a rich catalog of promises outlining the power of prayer. James 5:14-15, for instance, says:

> "Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up."

However, it is essential to understand that faith does not guarantee a specific outcome, and prayer is not about convincing ourselves that our desired outcome will occur. Instead, faith is about trusting God and submitting to His will.

The Bible illustrates two ways in which faith prays: with assurance and with submission. These types of prayer are applicable to different situations and should be used discerningly.

Praying with Assurance

Praying with assurance occurs when God has revealed the outcome. In the Bible, Elijah prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and his prayer was answered, resulting in a drought that lasted three and a half years (James 5:17). Similarly, God assured Elijah that He would send rain, and Elijah prayed with great confidence, knowing that his prayer would be answered (1 Kings 18:1, 18:42).

Praying with Submission

On the other hand, praying with submission occurs when God has kept the outcome hidden. This type of prayer is equally effective and does not indicate a lack of faith. For example, a man with leprosy approached Jesus, knowing that He could heal him but unsure if it was His purpose. The man prayed with submission, and Jesus healed him (Mark 1:40-41).

Prayers for Forgiveness

> "O Lord, I am so sorry. I lay before you my regret, my guilt, and my heartache. I ask for your forgiveness, and trust in your everlasting grace to redeem me and guide me in the right way. Thank you for your goodness to me, Jesus. I love you. Amen."

> "O Lord Father, all-powerful, and ever-living God, I thank You for even though I am a sinner, in the kindness of Your mercy, You've fed me with the precious body and blood of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of goodwill. May it purify me from evil ways and put an end to my evil passions. May Your Holy Spirit bring me charity and patience, humility and obedience, and growth in power to do good."

> "Lord Jesus, for too long, I’ve kept You out of my life. I know that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself. No longer will I close the door when I hear You knocking. By faith, I gratefully receive your gift of salvation. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for coming to Earth. Pray for God's strength and fullness

Prayer and faith are powerful tools to connect with God and strengthen your relationship with Him. In times of hardship, God is by your side, ready to listen and help you get through this period.

Praying with Faith

Faith prays in two ways: with assurance and with submission. Praying with assurance is done when God has made the outcome known, and praying with submission is done when God has kept the outcome hidden. For example, in the story of Elijah, he prayed with assurance that it would not rain, and it did not rain for three and a half years. On the other hand, when the outcome is unknown, praying with submission honours God. For example, a man with leprosy knew that Christ could heal him, but he did not know if it was Christ's purpose to do so. He prayed with submission, and Jesus healed him.

Praying for God's Strength and Fullness

"Dear God, in my moments of weakness, grant me strength. When I feel lost, guide me. Help me face the challenges before me with confidence and faith. Amen."

"Dear Lord, I am calling upon you today for your divine guidance and help. I am in crisis and need a supporting hand to keep me on the right and just path. My heart is troubled but I will strive to keep it set on you, as your infinite wisdom will show me the right way to a just and right resolution. Thank you for hearing my prayer and for staying by my side. Amen."

"Dear Lord, I humbly come before you, feeling overwhelmed and unsure of when this difficult season in my life will finally resolve. Help me trust in Your divine plan and believe that You have set these obstacles before me for a purpose. With Your guidance, I know that I can conquer any trial that comes my way. Grant me the courage to face each challenge head-on, to persevere when my spirit is weary, and to never lose sight of Your unwavering love. Amen."

Pray for God's revelation

When we pray with faith, we are assured that God hears our prayers and will grant us our requests. This is the promise that God makes to those who believe and trust in Him.

However, it is important to remember that prayer is not just about asking for what we want. Prayer is also about submitting to God's will and recognizing that He knows what is best for us.

In the Bible, we find many examples of prayers offered with faith. One such example is the prayer of Elijah, who prayed earnestly for rain, and his prayer was answered. Another example is found in James 5:14-15, where we are told that the prayer offered in faith will heal the sick.

As we pray, we must also be open to receiving God's revelation. This means that we trust God to reveal His plans and purposes to us and that we are willing to follow His guidance, even when it differs from our own expectations.

In Ephesians 1:15-18, the Apostle Paul prays for revelation, asking that the Holy Spirit would give us wisdom and revelation so that we may know God better. He prays that our hearts would be enlightened so that we may understand the hope we have in Christ and the riches of His glorious inheritance for us.

We, too, can pray for God's revelation in our lives. We can ask God to open our eyes to His truth and will, just as He revealed Himself to Paul on the road to Damascus. We can pray for wisdom and understanding, for the knowledge of His perfect plan for our lives, and for the strength to follow Him faithfully.

As we pray for God's revelation, let us also remember that our faith is an essential component of our prayers. It is through faith that we can be assured of God's presence, power, and provision in our lives. So, let us approach God's throne of grace with boldness and faith, knowing that He hears our prayers and will answer according to His perfect will.
