Gary's true identity

Gary Miller is the main antagonist of the FAITH series and the leader of the Eternal Order of the Second Death, a Satanic cult seeking to summon an apocalyptic demon. He is responsible for most of the paranormal events and activities occurring between 1986 and 1987, including the possession of Amy Martin.

Gary was originally one of many dead foetuses that were inserted by cultists into a portal to hell carved into Miriam Bell, the then-leader of the cult. One of the foetuses came back alive and was named Gary. He was raised by the cult so that he could bring the Unspeakable into the world.

Gary is obsessed with opening a portal to hell and preparing the world for the Antichrist. He attempts to do this with the help of his cult, seeking out a worthy vessel to bring about the Second Death.

Gary is a cold-blooded man who revels in the chaos he creates. He is manipulative and persuasive, capable of emotionally manipulating people to join his cult or perform actions that further his goals. He is shown to be quite intelligent, always staying one step ahead of John Ward, the protagonist of the series.

In his human form, Gary appears as a middle-aged bald man with a beard. He wears a hooded robe and sunglasses to conceal his red eyes. He also has a third eye on his forehead.

When he transforms into his true form, Astaroth, he becomes a quadrupedal creature. He is entirely red, except for his white eyes. He can only move by dragging himself forward with his clawed hands, as his legs are useless.

Gary is a powerful foe, capable of injecting people with a mysterious substance that causes them to have strange hallucinations. He can also mutate his body when needed. He carries a trident with him at all times.

Despite his demonic origins, Gary is referred to by his followers as a "normal human being, just like you and me".

Gary's goals

Gary was originally one of the many dead fetuses that were inserted by cultists of the Eternal Order of the Second Death into the portal to hell carved into Miriam Bell, the then leader of the cult. As the cultists sent many dead fetuses to hell, one came back alive. This corrupted baby was named Gary and raised by the cult so that he may bring the UNSPEAKABLE into earth.

Gary is responsible for most of, if not all, the paranormal events and activities occurring between 1986 and 1987, including goading the young girl, Amy Martin, into being possessed by The UNSPEAKABLE. He is the archenemy of John Ward.

Gary is a normal human being, just like you and me. He is a cold-blooded man that reveres in the chaos he creates by constantly unleashing devils to possess people. He doesn't discriminate by age as some of his victims are teenagers or young kids. He has also murdered animals in some of his rituals. Despite this, Gary's letters show that he can fake a warmer personality, acting like a caring and fatherly figure to those who either serve under him or plan to turn them into demons. His followers are blindly obedient to him, whether this is because of his fake charm or true nature is unclear.

At first, Gary resembles a normal bald human with some facial hair, often wearing a hooded robe and a pair of sunglasses. Although, it appears that he also possesses a third eye in his forehead. When confronting John, Gary slowly reveals his true self, transforming into a horrid monster with a maw. During their second battle, Gary loses any resemblance to a human, taking the form of a towering deformed monster with claws and inverted legs.

Gary's powers

Francis Gary Powers was a highly trained and experienced pilot. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Milligan College in Tennessee in June 1950 and enlisted in the United States Air Force in October of that same year. He was then commissioned as a second lieutenant in December 1952 after completing his advanced training with USAF Pilot Training Class 52-H at Williams Air Force Base, Arizona.

Powers was then assigned to the 468th Strategic Fighter Squadron at Turner Air Force Base, Georgia, as a Republic F-84 Thunderjet pilot. By 1960, he was already a veteran of many covert aerial reconnaissance missions.

Powers was discharged from the Air Force in 1956 with the rank of captain. He then joined the CIA's U-2 program at the civilian grade of GS-12. U-2 pilots flew espionage missions at altitudes of 70,000 feet (21 km), supposedly above the reach of Soviet air defenses. The U-2 was equipped with a state-of-the-art camera designed to take high-resolution photos from the stratosphere over hostile countries, including the Soviet Union.

Powers was also a survivor. On May 1, 1960, during a secret CIA spying mission over the Soviet Union, Powers was shot down by an S-75 Dvina (SA-2 "Guideline") surface-to-air missile over Sverdlovsk. Powers survived the crash but was captured and sentenced to 10 years in a Soviet prison for espionage. He served 21 months of his sentence before being released in a prisoner swap in 1962.

Powers was also a skilled writer. In 1970, he wrote the book "Operation Overflight" with co-author Curt Gentry.

Gary's minions

Gary Miller is the leader of the Eternal Order of the Second Death, a Satanic cult seeking to summon an apocalyptic demon. He is mentioned in the first two chapters as the one who kidnapped Amy and performed the ritual that got her possessed. He finally appears in Chapter III as one of the main antagonists, and is out to summon the UNSPEAKABLE so it can bring about the Profane Sabbath and the end of the world. He is a mysterious and disturbing, yet outwardly friendly man who claims to simply be a normal human being. But his kindness proves to be nothing but a paper-thin facade for a truly monstrous manipulator.

In the first part of Chapter III, a police officer helps bail you out against a demon at the clinic. When more people in red, presumably cultists, set his car on fire, he then chases them yelling about "those damn hippies!". No matter how fast you are to follow after him, he's already gored the next screen over. Doesn't matter who stands in their way, they'll kill anyone in their path.

In most endings of the same chapter, you walk through the aftermath of a battle between the police and cultists, with corpses of both sides strewn about.

Elite Mooks: The Malphas Acolytes are relatively fast, take a while to be defeated by the crucifix, and are the highest-ranking cultists aside from the leaders.

Feathered Fiend: In Chapter III, during the section where John explores a dark basement of the cult's hideout, upon obtaining the lantern, he will occasionally run into wires where ominous birds will perform jumpscares and flutter away. The third time, however, the bird transforms into a female humanoid demon with a bird head hanging upside-down from a broken neck as it walks backwards towards John. These demons, the Malphas Acolytes, become a regular enemy in the next section, the dark forest.

Full-Frontal Assault: The Thralls don't seem to be wearing anything but a coat of red paint.

In the Hood: The Cultists wear red robes as their uniform.

Shear Menace: The Thralls are insane cultists who will ambush John with scissors and kill him with a Slasher Smile.

Slasher Smile: The Thralls have a big wide grin in the animation where they stab John to death with a pair of scissors.

The Smurfette Principle: The thrall that shouts "HE IS HERE!" in the Candyland Sewers is the only one with a female voice.

Gary's fate

Gary Miller is the main antagonist of the FAITH series, a trilogy of horror games set in the 1980s. He is the leader of the Eternal Order of the Second Death, a Satanic cult seeking to summon an apocalyptic demon.

Gary is responsible for most of the paranormal events and activities occurring between 1986 and 1987, including the possession of Amy Martin, the daughter of the Martin family. He is the archenemy of John Ward, a priest who attempts to exorcise Amy.

Gary is a mysterious and disturbing figure who claims to be a normal human being, but his kindness is a facade for a truly monstrous manipulator. He is obsessed with opening a portal to hell and preparing the world for the Antichrist. To achieve this, he seeks a vessel for the Unspeakable, a powerful demon. Gary corrupts vulnerable people and preys on them at their lowest point, isolating them from their loved ones and promising them power.

Gary is first introduced in the first chapter of FAITH, where he is barely seen. The only indication of his presence is through red-coloured objects and letters, which are less commonly used in the game. In the third ending, after John shoots at an offering made by Gary's cult, he and his followers stop John on the road and seemingly butcher him to death.

In the second chapter, Gary takes on a more prominent role, directly interacting with the player and serving as the final boss. He is the owner of an apartment block that has been taken over by his cult. He uses the building as a base of operation, performing satanic rituals and turning its tenants into cult members.

In the third chapter, Gary becomes the main antagonist and serves as the final boss of the game. He is unmasked and revealed to be a bald, bearded man with a third eye on his forehead. He injects John with a mysterious substance, causing him to have strange hallucinations. John eventually escapes Gary's cult and confronts him, demanding to know what is happening. Gary allows John to ask three questions before attempting to dispose of him.

In the Golden Ending of Chapter III, John defeats Gary and foils his plan to bring about the Profane Sabbath, summoning the Unspeakable and causing Hell on Earth. Gary is dragged back to Hell by the Unspeakable as punishment for his failure.
